Walled Towns After The Walls Come Down
Removing fortifications left a distinctive ring of open ground around old towns, and what was built on that ring shaped the modern city more than the walls ever did.

When town walls stopped being useful they were demolished, and the strip they occupied became available all at once. What happened to that strip defines many cities today.
The walls were wider than they look
A defensive circuit was not just a wall. It included a ditch, a clear zone outside where building was forbidden, and often earthworks, which together formed a broad band.
That band was usually publicly controlled, so when defence became irrelevant a continuous ring of land came into single ownership around the whole town.
Few cities ever get such an opportunity. A single decision could place a ring road, a park system or a line of public buildings around the entire centre.
What was built on the ring
The commonest outcome is a circular boulevard, since the strip was already continuous and the right width, and traffic needed a route round rather than through.
Others planted the ring as parkland, which produced the green belts encircling several old centres and gave those cities their most used public space.
Institutional buildings frequently went there too, because the land was public and the sites were prominent, which is why theatres, museums and government buildings often form a ring.
The gates survive as junctions
Roads had to pass through gates, so all long-distance traffic converged on a few points, and those points remain the busiest junctions long after the gates are gone.
Names persist even where nothing physical does, and a district called after a gate usually sits exactly where the circuit was breached.
Radiating road patterns confirm it. Routes fanning out from a single point on the ring indicate a gate, since the roads outside had to aim at it from all directions.
What was inside stayed dense
Centuries of building within a fixed boundary produced very high density, with narrow plots, shared walls and buildings extended upwards rather than outwards.
That density persisted after the constraint was removed, because the plot pattern and ownership were already fixed and rebuilding happened piecemeal.
The contrast with the ring is therefore sharp. A tight irregular core meets a broad planned strip, and the join is visible on any map of such a city.
Where the walls stayed
Some towns kept their circuits, usually because they stopped growing early and had no pressure to remove them, which is a sign of economic decline rather than foresight.
Those walls later became assets, drawing visitors and protection, which reversed the original disadvantage in a way nobody could have anticipated.
The trade-off remains. A preserved circuit constrains movement and development permanently, and towns that kept theirs manage that constraint continuously.
