Bone, Horn And Antler: Working The Leftovers
Butchery by-products supplied strong, workable material for centuries of everyday objects, and each behaves differently enough to have supported its own separate trade.

Before plastics, the material that filled the gap between wood and metal came off the carcass. Bone, horn and antler are three quite different substances, and craftsmen treated them as such.
Three materials, not one
Bone is rigid, brittle and porous, and it works like a dense pale wood. It carves and takes detail well, and it will crack if bent.
Horn is layered protein and is thermoplastic. Heated, it softens and can be flattened, pressed or moulded, and it holds the new shape permanently once cool.
Antler is dense at the outside and spongy at the core, which makes it strong along its length and excellent for handles and tool sockets that take impact.
Horn as the early plastic
Horn's ability to be softened and pressed made it uniquely versatile. Sheets pressed flat could be cut into combs, spoons, drinking vessels and translucent panels.
Split thinly and flattened, it becomes translucent enough to let light through while remaining tough, which gave lantern panels and window glazing where glass was unavailable or unaffordable.
Off-cuts were not wasted. Scrap horn was pressed together under heat into composite blocks, because the material welds to itself, which is a genuinely unusual property.
The smell and the siting
Preparing horn and bone means separating them from surrounding tissue, usually by soaking, and the process is powerfully unpleasant while it is happening.
These trades therefore sat with the tanners and the boilers, on the edge of a settlement and typically downwind and downstream. The clustering was regulatory as much as practical.
Supply tied them to the slaughterhouse. Where butchery was, the by-product trades followed, and their fortunes rose and fell with the meat trade that fed them.
What was made from them
The list is largely everyday objects. Combs, buttons, handles, spoons, gaming pieces, needles, buckles and inlay panels are all things a household needed and replaced regularly.
Some uses were more specialised. Composite bows layer horn and sinew against wood precisely because horn resists compression and sinew resists stretching, which is an exact engineering choice.
Glue was another product entirely. Boiling hide, bone and hoof yields an adhesive that dominated woodworking for centuries and that reverses with heat, allowing repairs.
Why the trades vanished quickly
These materials were displaced almost completely within a few generations by moulded synthetics, which could be produced in any colour and any quantity at a fraction of the labour.
The by-product trades had no defence. Their advantage had always been cheapness and availability rather than performance, so a cheaper and more available substitute ended them.
What survives is small and deliberate, mostly knife handles and traditional instruments where the material's specific behaviour still matters more than the cost of working it.
