Chair Seats Woven From Splint And Rush
Woven seats let a chairmaker finish a frame without solid wood or upholstery, and each material carries a distinct pattern because of how it must be handled.

Before upholstery was affordable for ordinary furniture, most chair seats were woven from plant material. The weave patterns that survive are consequences of what each material will and will not do.
A woven seat solves a structural problem cheaply
A wooden plank seat requires a wide board, careful shaping and joinery that resists splitting, all of which cost time and good material.
Weaving across four rails uses cheap fibrous material and lets the seat flex under weight, which is more comfortable than a flat board and easier to replace when worn.
Because the frame does not have to accept a seat panel, the chairmaker can concentrate on turning and joining the posts, which is where the strength lives.
Splint is cut, rush is twisted
Splint comes from pounding or shaving a log of ash, oak or hickory into thin flexible strips that are woven flat, usually in a simple over-and-under or herringbone pattern.
Rush is a marsh plant twisted into a continuous cord as the weaver works, which produces the characteristic four triangles meeting at the seat's center.
The triangular pattern is not decorative. It is what happens when a cord is wrapped around the rails in sequence and the corners build up faster than the middle.
The material determines the geometry
Flat splint can turn a corner cleanly and so allows rectangular weaves that fill an irregular seat with wedge-shaped fills at the front.
Twisted rush cannot be turned sharply without breaking, so it must be wound continuously, which forces the spiral construction and the stuffed core underneath.
Cane, split from the outer skin of rattan, is thin and strong enough to be threaded through drilled holes, giving the hexagonal pattern found on formal chairs.
Seats were made to be replaced
A seat wears out long before a well-made frame does, and both splint and rush can be cut away and rewoven without disturbing the joints.
That expectation is why chair frames from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries commonly survive with much newer seats, sometimes several generations of them.
Repair traditions therefore persisted in places where the chairs did, and seat weaving remained a paid rural trade long after chairmaking industrialized.
Prewoven material changed the trade
Machine-woven cane sheeting, set into a routed groove with a spline, replaced hand threading for factory production and is what most modern chairs use.
It is faster and reasonably durable, and it can be identified by the continuous groove around the seat rather than individual drilled holes.
Hand weaving persists in restoration work, where matching the original method matters more than the time it takes.
