Felt Is Made Without A Loom
Wool fibres lock permanently together under moisture, heat and pressure, giving a cloth that needs no spinning or weaving and that suits mobile herding life particularly well.

Felt is the exception among textiles. It has no threads, no warp and no weft, and it is made directly from raw fleece by working it until the fibres refuse to separate.
What makes wool felt
Wool fibres carry microscopic scales along their length. Warmth and moisture make those scales lift, and agitation lets neighbouring fibres slide past each other and catch.
The catching is one-way. A fibre can advance but not retreat, so continued working steadily tightens the mass rather than loosening it, and the change cannot be undone.
This is why wool garments shrink irreversibly in hot washing. The same process that makes felt deliberately is the one that ruins a sweater accidentally.
The making is physical work
Fleece is spread in thin even layers with the fibres crossing direction between layers, which is what gives the finished sheet strength in every direction rather than one.
It is then wetted, often with hot water, and worked. Rolling, treading, beating and pressing all appear in different traditions, and all supply the same agitation by different means.
Large pieces were made by rolling the bundle behind an animal or by a group treading together in rhythm. Felt making at scale was therefore communal rather than solitary work.
Why herders adopted it
Felt requires no equipment beyond water, effort and the fleece itself, so it can be made anywhere the flock is. Nothing has to be carried except the product.
It also uses fleece that spins badly. Short, coarse or dirty wool that would make poor yarn will felt perfectly well, which turns a low-value part of the clip into useful material.
The result insulates well and blocks wind because it has no holes between threads. For tent covers, boots and outer clothing in cold open country that is exactly the property wanted.
Building with felt
Large felt sheets are structural. Tent coverings made this way shed rain by tightening when wet, insulate against both heat and cold, and can be rolled and carried on an animal.
Layers are added and removed seasonally. A covering that is right for winter is too heavy for summer, so the same frame carries different thicknesses through the year.
Repair is straightforward in a way woven cloth repair is not. A patch worked in with moisture and pressure joins the parent sheet rather than sitting on it as a separate piece.
Decoration by inlay
Because the sheet forms all at once, coloured wool can be laid into the surface before felting and becomes part of the fabric rather than something applied afterwards.
Cut-and-inlay methods take it further, fitting shapes of contrasting felt together and felting the joins so that a pattern runs right through the material.
The designs tend to be bold and curved, because fine detail blurs as the fibres migrate. The technique sets the visual style as firmly as any aesthetic preference does.
