Lost Wax Casting Gives You One Attempt
Metal casting through a wax model destroys both the model and the mould in the process, which means every piece is unique and every mistake is unrecoverable.

Cast metal figures of great complexity have been made for thousands of years by a method that consumes its own tooling. Nothing survives the pour except the metal object.
The sequence
The maker sculpts the object in wax, at full size and in full detail, since everything present in the wax will appear in the metal and nothing else will.
The wax is then coated in fine clay and built up into a solid mould, with channels left for metal to enter and for air to escape.
Heating the mould melts the wax out, leaving a cavity in exactly the shape of the model. Molten metal fills that cavity, and the mould is broken away once cool.
Why nothing can be reused
The model is gone by definition, having been melted out. The mould is gone too, because a solid shell around a complex object cannot be opened without breaking it.
That makes each casting a single event. A second identical piece requires a second wax model, sculpted again, with all the small differences a second sculpting brings.
Workshops that needed repeats made a reusable mould of the wax model instead, casting wax copies from it. The metal stage remained destructive, but the sculpting no longer had to be repeated.
Hollow casting and why it matters
A solid metal figure of any size is extremely heavy and uses a great deal of metal, which was often the most expensive input in the whole process.
Hollow casting builds the wax as a skin over a clay core, so the metal forms a shell. Pins hold the core in place once the wax between them has melted away.
Those pins usually remain in the finished piece as small marks, and they are one of the ways a hollow casting can be identified long afterwards.
What goes wrong
Metal that cools before filling the cavity leaves the piece incomplete, and thin sections are where this happens first. The design has to allow metal to reach every extremity quickly.
Trapped air is the other common failure. If the escape channels are wrong, a pocket of air stops the metal and leaves a void that may not be visible until finishing.
Moisture in the mould is the dangerous fault. Water turning instantly to steam under molten metal can eject the contents of the mould, which is why drying is done slowly and thoroughly.
The finishing nobody sees
A raw casting arrives with channels still attached, a rough surface and seams where the mould was built up. Cutting these away is a substantial part of the total labour.
Detail is then recut with chisels and punches. Much of the crispness admired in fine cast work is chased into the metal afterwards rather than achieved in the pour.
Surface colour is applied last, by controlled chemical treatment. The metal underneath is one colour, and the range of finishes seen on old cast work is a separate craft again.
