Sharpening Is The Skill Behind Every Other Tool
Every cutting trade depends on maintaining an edge, a skill taught before any other and one that determined how work was scheduled through a craftsman's day.

Every edge tool spends more of its life being maintained than being used hard. Sharpening is not a chore attached to a craft, it is the foundation the craft stands on.
What an edge actually is
An edge is the line where two ground surfaces meet, and its sharpness is simply how narrow that line is. Nothing else about the tool matters if that line is wide.
A blunt edge is a rounded one. Use rolls the extreme tip over and wears it away, and cutting force rises steadily as the tip broadens, long before the tool feels obviously dull.
The angle between the two surfaces sets the trade-off. A shallow angle cuts more easily and chips sooner, and a steep one lasts longer and requires more force.
Different jobs want different angles
A tool for soft material can carry a fine angle because nothing will chip it. A tool striking hard or knotty material needs a blunter, stronger geometry to survive.
That is why a workshop holds several apparently similar tools. They differ in edge geometry for different tasks, and using the wrong one damages it quickly.
Craftsmen adjusted geometry themselves rather than accepting what the maker supplied. A new tool was commonly reground before first use to suit the wood, stone or hide it would meet.
Stones came from specific places
Sharpening stones are natural rock with abrasive particles of a particular size and hardness, and only some quarries produce usable material.
Good stones therefore travelled long distances and were valuable, sometimes passed down through a family alongside the tools they served.
Coarse and fine stones do different work. The coarse one reshapes the edge and the fine one refines it, and skipping either wastes time or leaves the tool rough.
The rhythm of the working day
Work was organised around edge life. A craftsman cut until the tool told him it was time, then stopped and restored the edge, and that interval shaped the whole task.
Sharpening at the first sign of dullness is faster than waiting. A slightly dull edge is restored in moments, while a badly worn one needs the whole edge reground.
Apprentices sharpened for the workshop before they were allowed to cut anything, which taught them to judge an edge by feel and sound before they had a tool of their own.
The specialists who did nothing else
Towns supported grinders who sharpened for households and trades, working with large driven wheels that removed metal far faster than a hand stone could.
Many were itinerant, walking a circuit with a portable wheel and returning on a predictable cycle. Their route was effectively a service schedule for a district's knives and shears.
Cheap replaceable blades removed most of that work. When a dull tool is discarded rather than restored, the skill that kept it in service stops being passed on.
