Stone Walls Are Field Clearance That Stayed
New England's stone walls were built from rocks that had to be removed from fields anyway, and they mark plowed land that has since returned to forest.

Miles of dry stone wall run through northeastern woods where no field has existed for generations. The walls are not boundaries first; they are the byproduct of clearing ground for the plow.
The glaciers supplied the stone
Ice sheets deposited rock through the soil across the region, and frost heaving pushes new stones toward the surface every winter as water freezes and expands beneath them.
A field cleared one spring produces more stone the next, so clearance was not a single task but an annual obligation for as long as the ground was worked.
That continuous supply is why the walls grew over decades rather than being built in a season, and why their construction is often inconsistent along a single run.
Piling was the cheapest disposal
Stone removed from a field has to go somewhere, and hauling it any distance costs labor that a subsistence farm could not spare.
Dumping it along the field edge solved the problem at minimum cost, and the resulting linear pile happened to sit exactly where a boundary was wanted.
Many walls are therefore closer to tossed piles than to built structures, and only the walls along roads and house lots show careful laying.
Livestock made the walls functional
A pile becomes a fence when it is high and tight enough to turn animals, and pressure to improve them rose sharply during periods of intensive sheep raising.
Wooden rails were often added on top to gain height without more stone, and post holes or notches sometimes survive as evidence of that combination.
Where walls were built to hold stock, they run continuously and close gaps at streams and ledges, which distinguishes them from simple clearance rows.
Abandonment preserved them
When farming shifted west to deeper soils and railroads made that competition unavoidable, hill farms were abandoned and the fields grew back to woods.
Forest cover protects a dry wall from the freeze-thaw damage and root disturbance that open ground causes, so the walls outlasted the farms by a long margin.
Their presence in mature forest is the clearest available evidence of how thoroughly the region was once cleared.
Rebuilding is a distinct skill
Dry laying without mortar depends on placing each stone so its weight locks its neighbors, with long stones set across the wall to tie the two faces together.
Wallers work from a sorted pile and spend much of their time selecting rather than lifting, because the fit is what carries the structure.
Modern landscape walls with concrete cores look similar and behave differently, since they cannot flex with frost the way a dry wall does.
