Why Vowels Are Shifting Around The Great Lakes

Vowels occupy positions in a shared space
Vowel sounds are distinguished by tongue position and mouth shape, and they can be plotted in a two-dimensional space where each vowel holds a region.
Speakers need those regions to stay distinct, because if two vowels overlap, listeners can no longer tell the relevant words apart.
That requirement for separation is what makes vowel change systematic rather than random, since a movement by one vowel puts pressure on its neighbors.
A chain shift is movement into vacated space
When one vowel moves, it either crowds a neighbor or leaves an empty region, and the neighbor then shifts to restore the distance.
That second movement pushes or pulls a third, and the sequence can continue around the whole vowel space over generations.
Because each step preserves distinctness, speakers experience no communication difficulty and are generally unaware that anything is moving.
The northern shift has a known order
In the inland north the shift begins with the vowel in words like cat raising and becoming more prominent, which is the feature outsiders notice first.
Words like block then move toward the space that vowel left, and other vowels follow in sequence, so that a listener from elsewhere may briefly mishear a familiar word.
The shift is strongest in a band of industrial cities and weakens toward the rural areas between them, which is typical of changes that spread through dense urban contact.
Change spreads through networks, not distance
Innovations move most readily between places with heavy contact, so a change can appear in two distant cities before reaching the countryside between them.
Within a community, features often advance fastest among speakers with wide local social networks, and studies of individual cities have documented that repeatedly.
The result is a map where isolated urban points share a feature that the surrounding region does not, which looks strange until the mechanism is understood.
Regional accents are not converging
A common assumption is that broadcast media flattens regional speech, but the documented pattern for these vowels runs the other way.
Passive listening appears to have little effect on pronunciation, which is learned through interaction with peers rather than absorbed from recordings.
Vocabulary does spread through media readily, which is why regional words fade while regional accents in these cities have grown more distinct rather than less.
